Research

Conventions of the Post- Apocalyptic Horror genre:

  • A tight community of protagonists/ survivors
  • Abandoned and isolated locations
  • Survival
  • Heroic, mentally and physically male protagonist
  • Dangerous and deadly antagonists
  • Death
  • A deadly and deathly environment
  • Hopelessness
  • Constant fear
  • Contrast between slow and fast paced editing

Challenging Conventions

At first, Nye will appear to be the heroic male protagonist by saving Soul but will later be revealed as the antagonist as he started the apocalypse (blurring the lines between the heroic protagonist and the deadly antagonist).

My film probably won't have a tight community of survivors due to limited actors but Soul and Topia will grow close to survive.

Target Audience

Usually targeted to older teens and adults (15-24) as its content is seen to be more appealing to this specific demographic. The dark themes and violence also is targeted more to the male gender thus these types of films use these themes and conventions to make it more appealing. Due to scenes of violence, post-apocalyptic films are not intended for a younger audience but people of this demographic find it more enjoyable and entertaining to watch.

Plot

In the near future, a virus spreads through the world, killing everyone. Our apparent hero Doctor Nye (Nathan Vose) creates an antidote and injects the love of his life Soul (Siobhan Miller) and himself with it. Complecation arises when Topia (Melody Sproates) is introduced who is naturally immune to the virus. It is later revealed that Topia is in love with Nye.  It is revealed that Nye is our antagonist and started the apocalypse so that he and Soul could be together for eternity...

Shot by Shot Description

Shot of Soul in the empty college car park looking lost and vacant, sat in the middle of it (shot from the balcony) (possibly at night with the lights going off?).

We cut to Nye in the Lab injecting himself, dead bodies everywhere with him stepping over them (dark humour element). There's bodies on the table and he swipes them aside to see his paperwork.

Various shots of the Dean and vacant looking buildings for establishing shots inbetween. Ends with the pre apocalypse (challenging conventions. No fliter, brightness increased. Dystopian world will have some sort of dark filter).
