Poster and Magazine First Drafts

With my poster, I chose to have the film distributed by Working Title, Film 4 and Studiocanal as my film would be minor (but not independent) as it's not high quality/budget but does include some mainstream narrative features, such as a love story. I also included a website to show the social media and marketing side of the poster. I decided to go with the minimalist look for the poster as well as the magazine to create a feel for the film. Both the ancillary tasks are in black and white to show the bleak and post apocalyptic tone of the film. The filter ('MagicPen') I used for the picture above also looks like he has a skeleton back, furthering the genre of the film and a hint at the character's darkness.

I decided to base my magazine on Little White Lies and its layout due to the content of the film having both independent and mainstream features and the edited pictures fitting the look of the magazine. I wasn't sure whether to include text or to stick with the just the picture:

With the text, I conform to Little White Lies' conventions of having a theme every time one of their magazines come out and always having text somewhere on the cover. In the past, some magazines have tag lines such as "The Black Swan Issue" or "The Road Issue", so I made mine "The Broken Issue" since the film is called Broken. The picture also works well with the magazine's conventions as their magazine covers look drawn and artistic with the filter used ('Paint'). However, I prefer the magazine without the writing so I will try creating a draft with a more subtle text of the name of the film to see how that looks.

Edited Images

Created with flickr slideshow.

I have edited a few of my test shots using an app called Pics Art. The black and white filter I thought worked particularly well, adding to the post apocalyptic feel of the film.

The artistic 'drawing like' pictures look very Sin City and A Scanner Darkly inspired and I will take inspiration from their posters. They are also both minor/independent films; the same as my trailer.

The one's of the scientists back look very skeleton like and eerie which I like. It's hard to pick out one favourite! But if I had to, I really like the skeleton-like ones. I wish I could use them all!

Lab Scenes Rough Cut and Analysis

I filmed the Lab scenes from my trailer and edited them together (note that they won't simultaneously be after one another in the actual trailer, there are other scenes). I think shooting went well and I really enjoyed editing it. I was a bit worried about lighting, especially the shot when Nye says "It tolls for thee" as his face appears very dark but looking closer, I think it works well with the dark tone of the dialogue.

I applied a darker filter to my footage to make it feel more post apocalyptic with no light or hope. The rainy window was not in my shot list but I thought it fit well with the stormy mood of the trailer and narrative.

Font Analysis

"28 Days Later"
I like the rough feel this font has but to me lacks character and just looks bold compared to the others.

"Shut'Em Down"
I like this font. There's smashed glass and also bullet holes which is included (or alluded to) in my trailer.

"Burn out, fade away"
I like the canted angle of this font, but if I'm using this for a magazine front cover, it might upset a conventional symmetry a magazine has.

"Base 02"
I like this font and how it appears to be smudged.

"Thirsty for Souls"
I really like this font as it looks like liquid has been spilt and also smashed, which is how my trailer ends.

"Apocalypse"
I couldn't get a preview on this font but I like the rough edged drawings on it. Even though there's nothing 'broken' in it, it shows the theoretical 'cure finding' element of the trailer.

Test Shots

Created with flickr slideshow.

I took a few test shots of my main character to include in my ancillary tasks. However, I had a few issues with lighting and some of the photo's are really dark and some of them didn't turn out at all. But I do like the chiaroscuro lighting I've ended up with, suggesting that the character has a dark past.

The lab coat is also a bit too clean for my post-apocalyptic film. However, I know this now for when I shoot and take better pictures.

I found it hard to avoid lighting in the character's glasses and is clearly shown in the photos.

I really like the one with the character's back to the camera, looking down at the floor and also the one where he grabs his arm. I did intend for it to look like he has injected himself but looks more like he's going for a fight but it still looks good.
