Trailer Second Draft
I have changed quite a lot in my trailer compared to the first draft:
- I have changed my studios as I researched further and found that their credits fit my movie more being an independent studio.
- The broadcasts at the beginning and the narration of Nye since I forgot to include it in my first draft.
- The "from the producers of" credits since I wanted the trailer to sponsor more independent films rather than big credits such as Shaun of the Dead.
- I made the editing a bit more sleek and fast paced.
- I colour matched the scenes (responding to audience feedback)
- I included sound effects such as footsteps, wind, and gravel crunching so people can hear what characters are doing (as my sound wasn't very clear) and to also show my use of technology and sound.
- I changed the "Broken" title to look more like blood and fit more with the Kuleshov editing of the gunshot.
The trailer as a result looks more sleek, fast paced, clear, and more professional compared to my first draft.

Trailer First Rough Cut
This is my first trailer rough cut of all the scenes. I had to change most of the shots from my original shot list to schedule around time and convenience and also whether the shot was possible. I also found a new location I wanted to film in from after I created the shot list so I had to include that into the equation. I also haven't included the narration of the scientist at the beginning of the trailer as I haven't recorded it yet. But overall I say it's not a bad first draft considering how many people let me down when it came to shooting.
I added a filter to this shot to give it a desolate, bleak, dystopian look. I framed the first shot to make it look like someone is spying on Soul and the framing in both look particularly well which I am proud of. I like the framing of the smashed bus shelter and the camera looking through it.
Here, I did have a big jump cut scene of Soul appearing from place to place but I felt like it didn't keep the pace of the trailer and was too long- it looked like a scene from a full film. So I inter-cut it with a pan of Soul on the floor and cut between the two, making the pace seem quicker and audiences more interested, fitting the conventions of a trailer. I also applied a bleak filter to make the grass look dead and the light look bleak.
I used a canted angle in this shot to create a sense of uneasiness and something's not quite right. The tracking shot/zoom from a long shot to Soul's face adds to this and also creates a sense of alignment with her aural cue of a sad and lost look on her face. The audience are made to align with her and her loneliness.
I ended the trailer with a climax and cliffhanger to make the audience want to watch the film and see what happens next. I also applied the Kuleshov Effect in my editing with the shot of the gun and then the sound of a gunshot and credits of what looks like blood running down. However, the narrative is still open as to whether Nye dies- the shot could have missed. I decided against the original smashing of the test tube due to time limitations and health and safety. Plus, I think the credits I have used here look cool!
I included an after credit shot of Topia in the caves to shock the audience and create uneasiness. The green infrared filter of the camera has connotations of the horror genre and the wall on the right hand side looks like it's dripping with blood, again creating suspense and wanting the viewer to watch more. I tried editing a scream of Topia in but it sounded too cheesy so I left it as it is.
